This a first printing of the first UK hardback edition as indicated by the “W H Allen London 1981” statement on the title page and the “This edition 1981” statement on the copyright page with no subsequent printings mentioned. Originally published as a paperback original. Pictorial boards (no DJ as issued), white endpapers. Tail of spine heavily rubbed with ghost of sticker removal. Head of spine flattened and rubbed at the hinges. Front board clean, rubbed at the slightly turned corner tips. Back board rubbed at the corner tips with a diagonal pressure mark to lower left corner. Small surface rub to lower right and some sporadic pressure marks. Book has a slight lean and has been read but the binding is solid. Internally all pages are present. Small pen notation to the front pastedown, FEP, title page and REP. The only library stamps are on page 142 and the top edge of the text block. No obvious signs of pocket removal that I can see. Some small sporadic stains on text block and edges are quite dust soiled. As ex-library copies go this is one of the better ones and presents well on the shelf. An uncommon hardback in any condition this makes for a desirable Who collectable.
