James Herbert. Lair. New English Library 1979. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good / Very Good. This a first printing of the UK first edition as indicated by the “First published in Great Britain by New English Library …. in 1979” statement with no subsequent printings mentioned. Sharp clean black boards, immaculate gold blocking to spine, white endpapers. Head of spine ever so slightly flattened, tail just a little more so, very light bump at the bottom of the front spine hinge. A tight, pretty square standing copy appearing to be unread. Internally clean with no signs of previous ownership, store / library stamps etc. Pages age discoloured, more so at the edges, as expected for a NEL publication from this period (the pulp paper used in the 1970’s was lousy). Spine of DJ a tad sun faded with a small rub at the tail. Front panel clean showing a little faint creasing to the bottom edge at the spine hinge and a couple of very small white spots. Back panel clean showing only the most minor edge creasing / rubbing. Upper edges of the flap folds slightly curled with £4.95 price intact on front flap. Overall a very nice example of a super rare edition. I reckon this one is scarcer than The Rats – I have seen only half a dozen in all the years I have been collecting – and this copy is much better than many.
