James Herbert. Lair. New English Library. 1979. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good / Very Good. This a first printing of the UK first edition as indicated by the “First published in Great Britain by New English Library . . . . in 1979” statement with no subsequent printings mentioned. Black boards, gold lettering to spine, white endpapers. Boards show a touch of light soiling, upper corner tips slightly bumped, tail of spine a tad flattened, gold lettering on spine immaculate. The book has been read and has a slight lean. Text block is clean though age discoloured (the pulp paper NEL used in the 1970's really was rubbish). The DJ is in okay condition. The upper corners of the front and rear spine hinge are rubbed; the front and back panels show very light edge wear/creasing but are well saturated with only light surface rubbing; the spine is a little creased at the head, rubbed at the tail and slightly sun faded; rear flap shows a little creasing. £4.95 price is intact on the front flap. This is a very rare title (rarer than The Rats). I have maybe seen half a dozen over the years and condition wise this one is on a par presenting very well on the shelf.
